Couples Counseling

Factors of everyday life can put a continuous strain on any relationship.  Stressors develop over anything outside our normal cycles of living.  Life transitions can cause an imbalance when events are unplanned or unexpected.  Marriage has its full course of them.  Most people can be very optimistic about marriage and yet can lack skills for difficult moments and challenges of marriage.  Marriage is an adjustment in many ways.  A few common examples are when newlyweds become disillusioned on what they envisioned for marriage.  Additionally, in-laws can play a vital role.  They can be an asset or a liability depending on their attitude of support or feeling of entitlement in some way to interfere.  Sometimes couples have the need to set healthy boundaries, which can become difficult and awkward.  Marriage counseling provides opportunities for couples to get on the same page in making productive joint decisions.  The overall goal is to get couples pointed in the same direction, so that the couple can thrive and build a life together.  Other issues can include an unexpected pregnancy within or even outside marriage, first child pregnancy, child rearing, the responsibility of raising a special needs child including educational decisions.  Other marital issues can be divorce recovery, blending of second marriages with or without children, infidelity, bankruptcy, and the unexpected death of a spouse, child, relative or friend.  Single parenting support and loss counseling can be invaluable for individuals who have lost a spouse through death or divorce.  Sometimes people may have difficulty with forgiveness, trust issues, and even harbor buried resentment.  These can surface throughout a marriage resulting with intimacy issues and poor communication habits because of suppressed fears.  Mental illness, dementia, anxiety, depression, early diagnosed Alzheimer's disease, or even an unexpected illness such as cancer or coping with cancer can bring additional challenges to a marriage.  Without a strong support system, couples can despair, drift apart and lose each other, including their children.  Unresolved issues can manifest into feelings of helplessness, worthlessness, and isolation.

Carnuccio Counseling LLC has been a strong resource for many couples and families.  The nurturing of effective communication skills can minimize and/or alleviate emotional anxiety and frustration in the building of unified, successful and thriving relationships.

Couples often seek counseling when the relationship is at a standstill, or if they are unsure whether or not the relationship is worth salvaging.  This type of therapy can benefit families with children who have been affected by relationship issues such as divorce.  The goal of couples counseling is to confront the source of the conflict and to move the individuals toward positive conflict resolution.
